Official CELPIP Practice Tests vs Free Online Mock Tests: What Each One Gives You

Updated Oct 25, 2026

Candidates often treat the official CELPIP practice tests and third-party online mock tests as the same thing in two places. They are not. The official samples are the only material written by the test maker, so they are the reference for format and wording. A free CELPIP practice test on a prep platform is built for repetition and feedback: more sets, a timer, instant marks, and an estimate for the two sections the official samples leave you to judge yourself. Used in the right order they cover each other's gaps.

What the official practice tests give you

The CELPIP Free Practice Tests page on celpip.ca unlocks sample material after a short form. This is what you get and what you do not.

Included

  • Sample questions for all four sections in the real on-screen format.
  • Answer keys for Listening and Reading.
  • Sample Writing and Speaking responses with performance standards to compare against.
  • Free webinars on each skill, run by CELPIP.

Not included

  • A score or level for your Writing and Speaking answers.
  • Enough full tests for weekly practice; the free set runs out fast.
  • An error breakdown. You get right or wrong, not why.
  • More full-length tests are paid, in the CELPIP store.

What a free online mock test adds

A prep platform cannot copy official questions, so its value is everything around the questions. On PrepAmigo, two full-length CELPIP mock tests are free, and single-skill practice sets are available on the free CELPIP practice test page.

Included

  • All four sections in the real order with the real time limits, taken in one sitting.
  • Listening and Reading marked instantly.
  • An AI level estimate with comments for Writing and Speaking.
  • A results page you can review the next day, task by task.

Limits

  • Questions are exam-style, not official. Confirm format details against the official samples.
  • The Writing and Speaking level is an estimate, not an official result.
  • Beyond the free mocks, the rest of the test bank is part of PrepAmigo Pro.

Which one to use, and when

  • Week 1: do the official sample test first, untimed, to learn the interface, the instructions, and how each question type is worded.
  • Weeks 2 onward: one timed online mock per week, with the next-day review routine. Use single-skill practice sets on the other days.
  • Final week: return to the official sample once more so the real wording is fresh, and check your Writing against the official sample responses.
If an online mock and the official sample disagree about a format detail, the official sample wins. Treat the mock as training equipment, not as the rulebook.

Three mistakes to avoid

  • Repeating the official sample. After the second attempt you are remembering answers, not reading. Move to fresh material.
  • Treating an AI estimate as a result. Use it to spot which dimension is weak and to track direction. The CELPIP score chart tells you what each band means.
  • Mocks without a review. A mock you do not review the next day is a three-hour score check. The improvement is in the review.

FAQs

Are the official CELPIP practice tests free?

CELPIP offers free sample practice tests on celpip.ca after you fill in a short form. Longer practice test bundles and skill-specific study guides are sold separately in the CELPIP store.

Does the official practice test score my Writing and Speaking?

No. The free official samples give answer keys for Listening and Reading. For Writing and Speaking you compare your own answer with the sample responses and performance standards yourself.

Which should I do first, the official practice test or an online mock?

Do one official practice test first so you know the real interface and question wording. Then use online mocks for the weekly timed repetition the official set is too small for.

Start with the free CELPIP practice test for single-skill sets, or sit a full CELPIP mock test when you are ready for a timed run.
