Your official CELPIP score report shows a CELPIP level for the whole Writing section, together with level descriptors for the four writing dimensions, a Performance Profile describing the typical ability at that level, and Things to Work On suggestions.
Those descriptions refer to overall ability at that level. They are not separate scores for Writing Task 1 and Task 2. CELPIP does not publish per-task results, and it does not publish how much each task weighs or any raw-score formula you could add up yourself.
So when you read online that “the email is worth X marks” or “missing one survey element costs a fixed number of points,” treat it as unsourced unless it comes from official material.
Who scores your writing
According to the current CELPIP official FAQ, Writing uses a combined artificial intelligence and human scoring system, and all Writing results are reviewed and confirmed by the scoring team. The official score information page also states that a single Writing performance is typically evaluated by four to six Writing raters.
Your final Writing result comes from your performance across the scoring dimensions, converted into a CELPIP level — not from counting grammar errors.
The four dimensions
- Content / Coherence: the number and quality of your ideas, how they are organised, and whether they carry examples and supporting detail.
- Vocabulary: word choice, range, and whether your expression is accurate.
- Readability: format and paragraphing, connection and transition, grammar and sentence structure, spelling, and punctuation.
- Task Fulfillment: relevance, completeness, tone, and word count.
Why the four have to be read together
Few grammar errors does not automatically mean a high level. If Task 1 misses one required point, or Task 2 never commits to an option, Task Fulfillment takes the damage regardless of how clean the grammar is.
The reverse also holds: plenty of ideas delivered in muddled paragraphs with imprecise wording hurts Content, Vocabulary, and Readability at once. High-level writing answers the task completely, develops ideas fully, uses accurate language, and stays easy to read — all four at the same time.
How the two tasks contribute
Writing Task 1 is the email, with 27 minutes. Task 2 is the survey response, with 26 minutes. Both suggest 150 to 200 words. CELPIP states that slightly under or over the suggested range leaves some room, but that clearly too short or clearly too long may affect your result — word count is not the only criterion, but it is a formal part of Task Fulfillment.
Task 1 mainly shows whether you can complete an email for a specific reader and purpose. Task 2 mainly shows whether you can take a position and persuade a reader with reasons. Together they form your Writing Overall performance.
Because the report gives no per-task result, you cannot tell from your official score alone which task was weaker. In practice, apply the same four dimensions to each of your own responses and find the specific problem yourself.
There is no universal pass mark
CELPIP publishes no single passing level for Writing. The level you need is decided by the immigration program, school, professional body, or other organisation receiving your result.
CELPIP Level 9 corresponds to CLB 9 — but you reach Level 9 because the overall performance across both writing tasks meets the descriptors for that level, not because you inserted a few supposedly “Level 9” words.
Raising Writing Overall
- Confirm both responses answer every instruction completely.
- Check that each main idea carries specific support.
- Check paragraphing and logical order.
- Only then work on word choice, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
That sequence mirrors how the four official dimensions actually work — and it is far more reliable than guessing at unofficial per-task weightings.
