CELPIP-General takes just under 3 hours (CELPIP lists about 2 hours 50 minutes), completed in one sitting with no scheduled break, and CELPIP-General LS takes about an hour and ten minutes. The General test covers Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, while the LS version covers Listening and Speaking only.
This guide breaks the time down section by section, explains what the time ranges for two of the sections mean, and covers the rules that affect your time on the day: the section order, washroom breaks and the check-in cut-off. If you first want a plain introduction to the test itself, start with what CELPIP is.
How long is the CELPIP test in total?
CELPIP's own pages describe the total length of CELPIP-General in slightly different ways. You will see "under 3 hours", "2 hours and 50 minutes" and "about 3 hours" on different parts of celpip.ca. The safest summary is just under 3 hours, with CELPIP listing about 2 hours 50 minutes.
If you add up the four published section times, you get roughly 2 hours 37 minutes at the short end and 2 hours 59 minutes at the long end. That is our own arithmetic from the official section ranges, and it fits CELPIP's description of a test that runs just under 3 hours.
So if you are asking how many hours the CELPIP exam takes, plan on close to three hours of continuous test time. The whole test is delivered on a computer in a single sitting. CELPIP's test overview notes that you work with a personal timer on screen, and that the Writing section has a word counter and spell-check.
CELPIP section times at a glance
These are the section times listed on CELPIP's test format and scoring page, which match the CELPIP-General page and the CELPIP Test Taker Guidebook (July 2026).
| Section | Time | Parts or tasks | Questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 46–55 minutes | 6 parts | 38 questions |
| Reading | 43–56 minutes | 4 parts | 38 questions |
| Writing | 53 minutes | 2 tasks | Email and Survey Response |
| Speaking | 15 minutes | 8 tasks | 8 spoken responses |
A few details help you read the table:
- Listening has six parts with 8, 5, 6, 5, 8 and 6 questions, for 38 in total.
- Reading has four parts with 11, 8, 9 and 10 questions, also 38 in total.
- Writing is two tasks: writing an email and responding to survey questions. See the CELPIP writing format guide for what each task asks you to do.
- Speaking is eight tasks. The CELPIP speaking format guide walks through each one.
Speaking is the shortest section on the clock, and Writing is the only section with a single fixed time.
Why some CELPIP section times are ranges
Listening and Reading are listed as ranges (46–55 minutes and 43–56 minutes) instead of a single number. CELPIP does not give a reason for the range, but it does note that "The Listening and Reading Tests contain unscored items used for test development," so the exact content of these two sections can vary from one test to another.
In practical terms, the time you spend in these two sections can fall anywhere inside the published range. Writing (53 minutes) and Speaking (15 minutes) are listed as fixed times.
Two things follow for your preparation:
- Plan for the longer end. When you practise a full test, budget for 55 minutes of Listening and 56 minutes of Reading so your concentration does not fade before the section ends.
- Treat every question as if it counts. The test can include unscored items used for test development, so give each question your full effort.
The order of the four sections
CELPIP's Test Taker Guidebook numbers the components in this order:
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
This order matters for stamina. You start with up to almost two hours of Listening and Reading. Writing then asks you to produce two longer texts, and Speaking comes last, after you have already been working for well over two hours. It helps to rehearse speaking answers while a little tired, since that is how the real Speaking section will feel.
If you want to understand how each section is scored once you finish, the CELPIP overview explains the format and scoring in more depth.
How long does CELPIP last without a break?
There is no scheduled break in CELPIP-General. CELPIP's test day information page is direct about this: "Your test time does not stop for any reason, including washroom breaks."
That rule has a few consequences:
- The clock keeps running. If you leave the room during a section, the minutes you are away come out of that section's time.
- There is a hard limit. If you are away from your test for more than 20 minutes, your test is terminated.
- There is no rest period between sections. The test runs straight through from Listening to Speaking.
Because of this, it helps to treat a full-length practice test as a stamina exercise. Sit through all four sections in order, in one block, without pausing the timer. That shows you where your focus drops and whether you need to adjust how you eat, drink or warm up before the real test.
For pacing inside each section, such as how to avoid running short on a Reading part or leaving a Writing task unfinished, see the CELPIP time management guide.
How long is CELPIP-General LS?
CELPIP-General LS takes about an hour and ten minutes. It contains only the Listening and Speaking components, so there is no Reading or Writing section.
The two versions are used for different purposes:
| Test | Skills tested | Length | Main use |
|---|---|---|---|
| CELPIP-General | Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking | Just under 3 hours (CELPIP lists about 2 hours 50 minutes) | Canadian permanent residence, Australian visas, professional designations |
| CELPIP-General LS | Listening, Speaking | About an hour and ten minutes | Canadian citizenship |
According to the CELPIP-General LS page, the LS test is meant for Canadian citizenship applications, and the Guidebook notes it is offered in Canada only. CELPIP-General LS is not on IRCC's list of accepted tests for Express Entry, so if you are applying for permanent residence you need the full CELPIP-General test.
For citizenship, IRCC accepts both CELPIP General and CELPIP General-LS. Our guide to the CELPIP score for citizenship covers the levels you need.
Arrive before check-in closes
The length of the test is only part of your timing on test day. According to CELPIP's policies and forms page, check-in closes 15 minutes before the test starts. If you arrive after that, you will be denied entry and you will not receive a refund or a transfer. The same applies if you do not bring valid ID.
The times in this guide cover the test itself, so leave yourself a comfortable margin in your plans for the day. The CELPIP test day guide covers what happens from arrival to the end of the test.
When CELPIP results arrive
Once you finish, results appear online in your CELPIP Account usually within 2–4 business days (some CELPIP pages say 3–4), according to CELPIP's test results page.
Using the test length to plan your practice
Knowing how long the CELPIP test takes is useful mainly because it tells you what to train for. A few practical steps:
- Practise each section at its full length. Time Listening and Reading at the top of their ranges, Writing at 53 minutes and Speaking at 15 minutes.
- Do at least one full run in order. Listening, Reading, Writing, then Speaking, with no break, so you know what close to three hours of continuous work feels like.
- Build pacing habits section by section. The time management guide has drills for each skill.
If you want timed practice that follows the same section structure, you can try a full mock test on PrepAmigo.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours is the CELPIP exam?
CELPIP-General takes just under 3 hours, and CELPIP lists it as about 2 hours 50 minutes. It is taken in one sitting with no scheduled break. CELPIP-General LS, which covers only Listening and Speaking, takes about an hour and ten minutes.
How long is the CELPIP General test section by section?
Listening takes 46 to 55 minutes, Reading takes 43 to 56 minutes, Writing takes 53 minutes and Speaking takes 15 minutes. The sections run in that order: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking.
How long does CELPIP last if I need a washroom break?
The total does not change. CELPIP says your test time does not stop for any reason, including washroom breaks, so any time away comes out of the section you are working on. If you are away for more than 20 minutes, your test is terminated.
Why are the Listening and Reading times given as ranges?
CELPIP publishes those two sections as time ranges without giving a reason. It does say the Listening and Reading Tests contain unscored items used for test development, so their content can vary. Plan your practice around the longer end of each range and answer every question carefully.
How long is the CELPIP-General LS test?
CELPIP-General LS takes about an hour and ten minutes. It has only the Listening and Speaking components and is used for Canadian citizenship. It is offered in Canada only.
How long does the CELPIP Speaking test take?
The Speaking section takes 15 minutes and has 8 tasks. It is the last section of CELPIP-General, after Listening, Reading and Writing.
What happens if I arrive late for CELPIP?
Check-in closes 15 minutes before the test begins. If you arrive after that, you are denied entry and do not get a refund or a transfer, so plan your travel with plenty of margin.
How long does it take to get CELPIP results?
Results usually appear in your CELPIP Account within 2 to 4 business days after your test date, although some CELPIP pages say 3 to 4 business days.
