PTE Core results usually arrive within 2 business days and can take up to 5, and you check them in your myPTE account under My Activity. Pearson's PTE Core page says "Most test takers get their PTE Core results within two business days … In some cases, results may take up to five business days."
Getting the score is the easy part. The questions that follow are usually harder: how do you send it to IRCC, how long does it stay valid, how was it calculated, and what CLB level does it give you? This guide answers each one using Pearson's and IRCC's own pages, and includes the official PTE Core to CLB table with worked examples.
How long does it take for PTE Core results to come out?
Pearson's PTE Core page gives two figures:
- Usually: within two business days. The page headline puts it as "results typically in 48 hours".
- Sometimes: up to five business days.
Business days matter here. If you sit the test late in the week, a two-business-day turnaround can stretch over a weekend. If you're working towards an Express Entry deadline, plan around the five-day figure rather than the two-day one.
How to check your PTE Core result
According to the FAQ on Pearson's PTE Core page, you check your result in three steps:
- Log in to your myPTE account.
- Go to My Activity.
- Select your test to view your Score Report.
Your Score Report shows an overall score and a score for each of the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), all on a 10 to 90 scale (PTE Core scoring).
Sending your PTE Core score to IRCC
You share your score with IRCC using your Score Report Code (myPTE score assignment); IRCC doesn't accept paper or PDF reports.
Pearson's pages describe this slightly differently, so here is what each one says:
- Pearson's help centre says to "share your score with the IRCC using the unique Score Report Code (SRC)".
- The PTE Core Score Guide (January 2026) says "The IRCC does not accept paper or PDF versions of PTE Core Score Reports" and that you share it "directly … or via the myPTE score assignment process."
- The banner on the PTE Core scoring page says "Scores shared automatically with the IRCC".
Because two of the three pages tell you to share the score yourself, the safe approach is to keep your Score Report Code to hand and complete the score assignment in myPTE, rather than relying on an automatic transfer. A downloaded PDF of your report won't count as proof for IRCC.
How long PTE Core results stay valid
Pearson and IRCC both use a two-year window, with slightly different wording:
| Who | Rule |
|---|---|
| Pearson | "A PTE Core score is valid for two years from the test date." (PTE Core page) |
| IRCC, Express Entry | Results must be "less than 2 years old" when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence (IRCC language testing) |
| IRCC, PGWP | "Your test results must be less than 2 years old when you submit your application" (PGWP documents) |
| IRCC, citizenship | Include your test results "even if they're expired" (citizenship language proof, step 2) |
The Express Entry rule has two checkpoints. A score that is valid when you create your profile can expire before you're invited and submit your PR application, so check the test date against your likely timeline.
How the PTE Core score is calculated
If you're searching for how to calculate a PTE Core score yourself, the short answer is that you can't reproduce it exactly. Pearson's scoring page says "All PTE tests, including PTE Core, are scored by a computer … There is no interaction with a human examiner during your test." What you can understand is how the pieces fit together.
The scale. "Your overall score and individual communicative skills scores will be reported on a numerical scale of 10-90." (PTE Core scoring)
The overall score is not an average. The Score Guide says: "the overall score is not an average calculation of the communicative skills scores." Adding your four skill scores and dividing by four won't necessarily give you your overall score.
Some tasks count twice. Also from the Score Guide: "Some tasks assess more than one skill at the same time. These are called integrated skills … The scores on these tasks contribute to the score of both communicative skills". Our task map and dual scoring lesson shows which tasks contribute to which skills.
IRCC ignores the overall score. Pearson's help centre says "the IRCC only requires individual skill scores: your overall PTE score will not be required and cannot be converted into CLB." For immigration, the four skill scores are what count.
How to calculate your CLB score from PTE Core
To work out your CLB level, take each skill score separately and find the row it falls into in IRCC's table. IRCC looks at each ability on its own, so you get four CLB levels, one per skill. This is the table from IRCC's Express Entry language testing page:
| CLB | Speaking | Listening | Reading | Writing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 and above | 89+ | 89+ | 88+ | 90+ |
| 9 | 84–88 | 82–88 | 78–87 | 88–89 |
| 8 | 76–83 | 71–81 | 69–77 | 79–87 |
| 7 | 68–75 | 60–70 | 60–68 | 69–78 |
| 6 | 59–67 | 50–59 | 51–59 | 60–68 |
| 5 | 51–58 | 39–49 | 42–50 | 51–59 |
| 4 | 42–50 | 28–38 | 33–41 | 41–50 |
The CLB 4 reading and writing figures come from IRCC's PGWP language results page. Pearson's scoring page publishes the same bands. For a fuller walkthrough of targets by program, see our PTE Core score targets and CLB levels lesson.
The same number can land on different CLB levels depending on the skill. The writing bands start higher than the others from CLB 7 upwards, so the same score can give a lower CLB in writing than in the other three skills.
Worked examples: converting PTE Core scores to CLB
How much is 77 in PTE Core in CLB?
The CLB level for 77 depends on the skill:
| Skill | Score | Band | CLB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speaking | 77 | 76–83 | CLB 8 |
| Listening | 77 | 71–81 | CLB 8 |
| Reading | 77 | 69–77 | CLB 8 |
| Writing | 77 | 69–78 | CLB 7 |
So 77 in every skill gives CLB 8, 8, 8 and 7. Reading at 77 is the top of the CLB 8 band, so one point more (78) would reach CLB 9. Writing at 77 is still in CLB 7 and would need 79 to reach CLB 8.
A mixed profile
Speaking 70, listening 58, reading 62, writing 66:
- Speaking 70 → CLB 7
- Listening 58 → CLB 6
- Reading 62 → CLB 7
- Writing 66 → CLB 6
For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, IRCC requires CLB 7 in all four abilities (IRCC language testing). This profile falls short in listening and writing. For where PTE Core is accepted in Canada, see Is PTE Core accepted for Canada PR?
A citizenship check
For citizenship, IRCC asks for PTE Core "28 or higher in listening and 42 or higher in speaking" (citizenship language proof, step 5). That matches CLB 4 in the table above. Listening 35 and speaking 45 would meet it.
How to get CLB 9 in PTE Core
For CLB 9 or higher you need at least 84 in speaking, 82 in listening, 78 in reading and 88 in writing (89+ speaking, 89+ listening, 88+ reading and 90+ writing count as CLB 10+). The CLB 9 ranges themselves are:
- Speaking: 84–88
- Listening: 82–88
- Reading: 78–87
- Writing: 88–89
Two things stand out. The writing band for CLB 9 is only two points wide, and anything at 90 moves you into CLB 10. Reading has the lowest entry point of the four, at 78.
Since the overall score doesn't convert to CLB, aim at each skill separately. Integrated tasks feed two skills at once, so a weak task type can drag down more than one score; the task map helps you see where. If you want to find out which skill is furthest from its CLB 9 band, a timed attempt on PrepAmigo's PTE mock tests gives you something to compare against the table. No practice method can promise a particular band, so treat any estimate as a guide.
What to do if your PTE Core scores are lower than you need
Start by finding which skill is short. Because IRCC applies CLB to each ability separately, one skill below your target is enough to miss a program minimum, even if the other three are well above it.
If you decide to take the test again, you book a new PTE Core test in the usual way through myPTE. Keep Pearson's cancellation and rescheduling policy in mind when you pick the date: you can reschedule for free if there are more than 14 full calendar days left, up to 6 times, and inside 14 days you can't reschedule and must cancel and book again. Our guide on booking and rescheduling PTE Core covers this in more detail.
Also check that the date of your new result still works with the two-year validity rules above for the application you're making.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get PTE Core results?
Pearson says most test takers get PTE Core results within two business days, and in some cases it can take up to five business days.
How do I check my PTE Core result?
Log in to your myPTE account, go to My Activity and select your test to view your Score Report.
Are PTE Core scores sent to IRCC automatically?
One Pearson page says scores are shared automatically, but Pearson's help centre and Score Guide say you share your score using your Score Report Code or the myPTE score assignment process. IRCC does not accept paper or PDF score reports, so complete the sharing step in myPTE yourself.
How long is a PTE Core score valid?
Pearson says a PTE Core score is valid for two years from the test date. For Express Entry, IRCC needs results less than 2 years old both when you complete your profile and when you submit your PR application. For citizenship, expired results are accepted.
Is the PTE Core overall score an average of the four skills?
No. Pearson's Score Guide says the overall score is not an average of the skill scores. IRCC does not use the overall score and it cannot be converted into CLB.
How much is 77 in PTE Core in CLB?
It depends on the skill. A 77 is CLB 8 in speaking, listening and reading, and CLB 7 in writing.
What PTE Core score do I need for CLB 9?
For CLB 9 or higher you need at least 84 in speaking, 82 in listening, 78 in reading and 88 in writing (89+ speaking, 89+ listening, 88+ reading and 90+ writing count as CLB 10+).
