PTE Core vs PTE Academic: Which Test Do You Need?

PTE Core and PTE Academic are separate Pearson tests for different purposes: which one Canada accepts, how the task lists differ, what prep carries over.

PTE Core and PTE Academic are two separate Pearson tests with different task types. They share a brand, a test interface style and many task names, so it is easy to book the wrong one or study from the wrong material. This lesson explains which test does what, where the two differ, and which parts of your preparation carry over.

Purpose and recognition

PTE Core is the Pearson test for Canada. Per IRCC's Express Entry language testing page, the accepted English tests are CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core, and if you take a Pearson test you must take the PTE Core option.

PTE Academic has a different purpose. Pearson describes it as a test for global study, visa applications to Australia and New Zealand, and professional registration. It is not the Pearson option IRCC lists for Express Entry.

Everything else in this course describes PTE Core.

Similar task names, different rules

Many task names appear in both tests: Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Respond to a Situation, Answer Short Question, Summarize Written Text, Summarize Spoken Text, Write from Dictation, Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words, the multiple-choice tasks, the fill-in-the-blanks tasks and Reorder Paragraphs.

Each test also has tasks the other does not. Write Email is in PTE Core only. Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion, Write Essay and Highlight Correct Summary are in PTE Academic only.

A shared name does not mean shared rules. Per Pearson's PTE Core Speaking and Writing format page, these are the Core rules for two writing tasks:

  • Summarize Written Text: a summary of 25–50 words, written in 10 minutes.
  • Write Email: an email of 80–120 words, written in 9 minutes.

PTE Academic sets its own timings and word limits. Do not apply Core rules to Academic tasks, or Academic guides to Core tasks. If you ever need the Academic rules, check Pearson's PTE Academic pages directly.

What prep transfers and what does not

What transfers: general language skills. Listening for detail, accurate spelling, clear pronunciation, steady fluency and a wide vocabulary help in both tests.

What does not transfer: anything test-specific. Timings, word limits, the task list and scoring rules all belong to one test. A strategy written for one test can cost you marks in the other, even when the task name is the same.

For the full PTE Core task list and which skills each task counts toward, see the task map.

If you book the wrong test

IRCC only accepts the PTE Core option among Pearson tests for Express Entry. Before you pay, check that the product name on your booking says PTE Core, and compare it with Pearson's official PTE Core overview. For program requirements, use the IRCC language testing page.

FAQ

Can I use PTE Academic for Express Entry?

No. IRCC lists PTE Core as the accepted Pearson test for Express Entry and says you must take the PTE Core option.

Is PTE Core easier than PTE Academic?

Neither is simply easier. They are different tests built for different purposes, with different task lists and rules. Choose the one your application requires.

Can I use PTE Academic study books for PTE Core?

For general skills such as listening, spelling and pronunciation, yes. For task rules, timings, word limits and strategies, no: use PTE Core material only.
