Can I Reschedule My CELPIP Test? Transfer and Cancel Rules

Oct 7, 2026

Yes, CELPIP calls it a transfer: you can move your test at least 7 calendar days before the original date, with a transfer fee of up to CAD $50 plus tax (CELPIP's policy page says the first transfer may be free). Inside that 7-day window, you need to contact CELPIP customer service instead.

The deadline you are working against is the single most important detail. Cancelling, transferring and turning up late all have different outcomes depending on how many days are left before your test, and test takers in India work to a longer window. This guide sets out each rule from CELPIP's Policies and Forms page, gives you a quick decision table, and finishes with tips for choosing a date you are less likely to need to move.

Can we reschedule a CELPIP exam? What CELPIP calls a transfer

When you book CELPIP, you reserve a seat in one specific test session. Moving that booking to a different test session is what CELPIP calls a transfer. So when people ask "can we reschedule the CELPIP exam", the policy they need is the transfer policy.

There are two separate options if your booked date no longer works:

  • Transfer: keep your booking and move it to another session.
  • Cancel: give up the booking and receive a partial refund, if you are early enough.

Both options depend on timing. The rules are set out in calendar days, so weekends count towards the total.

CELPIP transfer rules: the 7-day window

According to CELPIP's Policies and Forms page, you can transfer your test if you request it at least 7 days before your original test date.

If you are inside that window, with fewer than 7 calendar days to go, the regular transfer deadline has passed. CELPIP asks you to contact customer service instead. Depending on your situation, you may need to provide documents to support the request, such as a doctor's note or evidence of bereavement. Because these requests depend on your circumstances and the evidence you can provide, do not assume a late transfer will be approved. Contact CELPIP as soon as you know you have a problem.

CELPIP transfer fee

The transfer fee is up to CAD $50 plus tax. CELPIP's wording is not fully consistent on this point: one statement says the first transfer is free and later transfers cost CAD $50, while another lists a flat CAD $50 plus taxes with no mention of a free first transfer. In practice, budget for CAD $50 plus tax and treat a free first transfer as a possibility you can confirm when you make the request.

For context on the size of that fee, CELPIP-General in Canada costs around CAD $280–$299 plus tax (CELPIP's own pages list several figures, and the price at registration is final). International pricing varies. Our CELPIP test fee guide explains where those figures come from.

Cancel a CELPIP test: refund rules

If you decide not to take the test at all, the refund depends on when you cancel. CELPIP's Policies and Forms page sets two outcomes:

When you cancelRefund
At least 7 calendar days before your test50% refund
Fewer than 7 calendar days before your testNo refund

A cancellation returns half of what you paid at best. If you still plan to take CELPIP at some point, a transfer is usually the cheaper route. As a rough comparison using the Canadian price above, half of a CELPIP-General fee is well over CAD $100, while a transfer costs up to CAD $50 plus tax. That is our own arithmetic, and the exact amounts depend on what you paid and where you booked.

Taking CELPIP in India: a 9-day window

The rules are different if you are taking CELPIP in India. CELPIP's India country page states that the window for both cancellations and transfers is 9 calendar days instead of 7. So in India:

  • To transfer, request it at least 9 calendar days before your test.
  • To cancel with a partial refund, cancel at least 9 calendar days before your test.

The same page states that test sessions in India must be at least 30 days apart. Keep this in mind if you are planning a retake: you cannot book a second sitting shortly after the first. For more on testing in India, including where the test centres are, see our guide to CELPIP in India.

Retake spacing outside India

Outside India, CELPIP's general rule is that you cannot sit more than one test session within 5 calendar days. If you are booking a retake, or choosing a new date after a transfer, check that the new session is not within 5 calendar days of another session you are booked into or have already taken.

Late arrival and ID: when there is no transfer or refund

Two test-day situations end with no transfer and no refund, regardless of how far ahead you booked:

  • Arriving late. Check-in closes 15 minutes before the test starts. If you arrive after that, you will be denied entry, and you will receive no refund or transfer.
  • No valid ID. If you cannot present valid identification, the outcome is the same: you will be denied entry, with no refund or transfer.

Both are covered on CELPIP's Policies and Forms page. Because the cost is the full test fee, plan your route with extra time and check your ID well before the day. The CELPIP test day guide walks through what happens from arrival to the end of the test.

Decision table: what you can do, by days before your test

Use this table to find your options quickly. Count calendar days, including weekends. If you are close to a cut-off, act sooner rather than relying on an exact count.

Your situationTransferCancel
7 or more calendar days before your test (9 or more in India)Yes; in Canada a fee of up to CAD $50 plus tax, and the first transfer may be free (India: confirm the fee with CELPIP)Yes, 50% refund
Fewer than 7 calendar days before your test (fewer than 9 in India)Contact customer service; you may need documents such as a doctor's note or evidence of bereavementNo refund
Test day, arriving after check-in has closed (15 minutes before the test)NoNo refund
Test day, no valid IDNoNo refund

The transfer fee shown is the CAD figure from CELPIP's policy page. If you are about to cross from the first row into the second, that is the moment to decide. A day's delay can be the difference between a planned transfer and a request that depends on documents.

How to reschedule a CELPIP test

Transfers and cancellations are handled by CELPIP under the terms on its Policies and Forms page. Follow the process described there, and use the CELPIP customer service contact if you are already inside the 7-day window (9 days in India).

Before you start, have these details ready:

  1. Your current test date and location, so you can count the calendar days remaining.
  2. Whether you are testing in India, since the window there is 9 days.
  3. A new date that respects the spacing rules: at least 30 days between sessions in India, and no more than one session within 5 calendar days elsewhere.
  4. Supporting documents, if you are inside the window and your reason is something like illness or a bereavement.

Once the change is confirmed, check the new date, time and centre before the day. Your test-day obligations, including the check-in time and ID, apply to the new session in exactly the same way.

How to reschedule a CELPIP exam date without hurting your plans

Moving a test can push back everything that depends on it. These points help you pick a new date, or your first date, with fewer surprises.

Leave a buffer for results. CELPIP's test results page says results are usually available online within 2–4 business days (some CELPIP pages say 3–4). If you have an application deadline, choose a date that leaves room for those business days plus a margin, and remember that weekends and holidays do not count as business days. Our guide on how to check CELPIP results explains where your scores appear.

Think about IRCC's 2-year rule. For Express Entry, IRCC's language test page requires results to be less than 2 years old both when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your application for permanent residence. A later test date means your results stay valid for longer into that process, while an earlier one gives you time to retake if needed. For citizenship, IRCC accepts results even if they are expired. CELPIP keeps your score report available for 5 years. The details are in how long CELPIP results are valid.

Book a date you can commit to. Look at work shifts, travel and family events before you book. A date you are confident about is cheaper than a transfer.

Plan your preparation backwards from the date. If you are moving your test because you feel underprepared, use the extra weeks with a plan. The CELPIP preparation guide can help you structure the time, and a timed PrepAmigo mock test can show whether the new date is realistic.

Decide early. Nearly every rule above rewards acting before the 7-day mark (9 in India). As soon as you suspect the date will not work, check your options.
